BIO

This delicately featured, expressive actress broke the mould to some degree when she burst onto the scene as a teenager in the late 1980s, with her unconventional, goth-inspired looks and a more whimsical, boyish femininity than the typical American girl next door. Ryder quickly made a name for herself and silenced early doubters with strong performances in teen dramas and coming-of-age films such as Lucas and Square Dance, before leaning into more offbeat fare with Tim Burton's Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands. As the '80s turned into the '90s, Ryder became one of the most sought-after actresses of her generation, landing lead roles in major productions such as Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Age of Innocence, and Little Women. After the turn of the millennium, Ryder's career began to decline – due in part to personal struggles – but she made a triumphant return with the cult hit series Stranger Things from 2016 onwards.
