British actor, often in controversial leads during the 1970s and early 1980s, interested in playing socially or sexually deviant characters which allow him to work his intense eyes and seductive speaking voice. McDowell broke through with the trendsetting films If.... (by Lindsay Anderson) and A Clockwork Orange (by Stanley Kubrick), but despite great potential, he wasn't able to deliver performances of an equal quality in the following years, and by the mid 1980s, he was largely out of favour before reappearing in higher profile films in the 2000s.
