If....
(1968)
Lindsay Anderson's once controversial film about the riots of emotionally and sexually oppressed 1960s British public school pupils still retains its edge and distinction after forty years. Malcolm McDowell's cocky performance is the source of the arrogance he and his buddies shoved down contemporary rigid British throats. And Anderson's delicious, often random stylistics only complemented the chaos which his characters embraced. The Cannes jury was in awe, the outside world watched appalled, and Malcolm McDowell became a sought-after name.
