PORTRAIT

Expressive, sad-eyed American lead who peaked during a fine run of performances in high-quality films during the mid-90s. Cage, nephew of Francis Ford Coppola, started out in lightweight teen-films in the early 80s, before moving on to larger productions towards the end of the decade, often in comedic and eccentric parts. He did however attract attention and praise for his work in films such as Birdy (1984) and Moonstruck (1987) before eventially receiving more and more leads in the mid 90s. Artistically and commercially, he was at his best during this period, and he garnered an Oscar in his first year as a nominee for his harrowing portrait of an alcoholic in Leaving Las Vegas. He followed up with a superbly flamboyant performance opposite John Travolta in John Woo's smash hit Face/Off. However, in recent years, Cage hasn't been able to sustain this high level. Struggling to renew himself, he has been under criticism for uninspired and often insipid or overdone performances.
