PORTRAIT

Sensitive, good-natured character actor of American film with a rugged appearance and a characteristic, clefted nose. He was apt in roles of ambiguity, in which he had to fight moral dilemmas, such as in A Steetcar Named Desire, Baby Doll or One-Eyed Jacks. Although gentle, Malden had a power and physical presence to his acting that could be daunting. Appeared opposite friend Marlon Brando in three movies.
