Perhaps the child performer in history who best handled the transition to adult performer in Hollywood, Jodie Foster has gained a solid, unapproachable status in the business by moving from adorable TV roles to courageous parts as an adolescent (notably in Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver) and into a commanding leading lady before eventually settling down as a director and producer. Strikingly, though somewhat off-standard beautiful, with probing eyes and a winning smile crowning a somewhat pallid face, Foster has elegantly toggled between the sexy and sophisticated (Maverick) and the much more unglamorous (The Brave One). She is one of the few actresses that may well be able to keep it going in a Hollywood business that can be merciless to middle-aged women, because she has created a persona that doesn't rely on polished looks but rather on her strong personal and artistic presence.
