PORTRAIT

Perhaps the child performer in history who best handled the transition to being an adult performer in Hollywood, Jodie Foster has gained a solid, unapproachable status in the business by going from cute tv-roles through courageous roles as an adolesence (notably in Scorsese's Taxi Driver) and into a commanding leading lady before eventually becoming a director and producer. Strikingly, but somewhat off-standard beautiful with probing eyes and a winning smile crowning a somewhat pallid face, Foster has elegantly toggled between the sexy and elegant (Maverick) and the much more unglamourous (The Brave One). She is one of few actresses that might keep it going in a Hollywood that can be merciless to middle-aged women, because she has created a persona that doesn't rely on polished looks, but rather on her strong personal and artistic presence.
