Handsome, versatile character actor who rose to prominence through college mate John Sayles' films in the 1980s, gradually building a reputation as a reliable and serious supporting performer. Strathairn delivered an immense and daring performance as an abusive father in Taylor Hackford's underrated masterpiece Dolores Claiborne, and was later nominated for an Acadamy Award for his portrayal of journalist Edward R. Murrow in George Clooney's Good Night, and Good Luck.
