BIO
An eclectic
and prolific filmmaker with an experimental streak and a flair for genre
reinvention, Steven Soderbergh has carved out one of modern cinema’s
most unpredictable careers. He rose to prominence with
sex, lies and videotape
(1989), his low-budget debut that won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and
helped spark the American independent film movement of the 1990s.
From there, Soderbergh alternated between high-concept studio fare and
more intimate, formally daring projects. His work spans sleek commercial
hits like Out of Sight,
Erin Brockovich,
and
Ocean's Eleven
as well as innovative, risk-taking films such as Schizopolis,
Bubble, and The Girlfriend Experience. In 2000, he achieved
the rare feat of being Oscar-nominated for Best Director twice in the
same year (Erin
Brockovich
and
Traffic),
winning for the latter.
Soderbergh is a restless formalist who often serves as his own
cinematographer and editor, and who has proven himself to be one one of
the most intellectually curious and broadminded directors of his
generation.
