Matthew McConaughey
FILMOGRAPHY (ONLY REVIEWED ENTRIES)
Matthew McConaughey combined a sun-drenched charm with a philosophical eccentricity to become both a Hollywood heartthrob and a countercultural figure of sorts. He made his debut in Dazed and Confused (1993), delivering a line that would become emblematic of his career: “Alright, alright, alright”. During the rest of the 1990s, he cemented his status as the new Southerner kid on the block, appearing in films such as A Time to Kill (1996), Lone Star (1996) and Contact (1997), bringing a distinctive Southern swagger and a quietly magnetic presence to his roles. After getting stuck between romantic comedies like The Wedding Planner (2001) and thriller-driven roles such as Reign of Fire (2002) for a while, followed by a highly publicised period of overexposure and typecasting, McConaughey embarked on a self-styled “McConaissance”, winning an Academy Award for Dallas Buyers Club (2013) and appearing in a string of critically acclaimed films, including The Lincoln Lawyer (2011), Mud (2012) and Interstellar (2014). Outside cinema, he cultivated a life of philosophical reflection, Texas pride, and occasional eccentricity, from his surfboard-fuelled memoir Greenlights (2020) to his sporadic forays into political commentary.
