Review

A seminal British horror picture that explores cultism, heathenism and sacrifice with a delightful sense of glee. Though the frame mystery for the most part has a television detective story quality, the film has personality; it’s directed with flair and playfulness (though also some amateurishness) by first-time director Robin Hardy. The key to the chilling effect, which is neither visceral nor exploitative in nature, except for the occasional focus on Ingrid Pitt's breasts, is that the final scene dares to bask in and dwell on the fanaticism upon which it all is based.
