Review

Young Libuše Šafránková is a delight as the title character in this humanised version of the Cinderella story, as conceived by Czech writer Božena Němcová. Set and shot around the Svihov castle and the surrounding forests of Bohemia, the film boasts a mythical atmosphere and is notable for combining the fantastical elements of the fairytale with a down-to-earth and realistic portrait of its leading characters, including a warmhearted relationship between the king and his son. The film has become a Christmas holiday classic in various European countries and continues to attract new audiences – arguably thanks to its timeless quality. A fine piece of traditional European filmmaking.
