Review
This
1988 documentary was in many respects the start of the true-crime
wave that won ground during the 2010s. Errol Morris' uninvasive,
seemingly impartial directorial style became trendsetting for
documentaries, even if it wasn't quite groundbreaking. And his
subjects, particularly murder suspect Randall Adams, gave the film
an intensity and honesty that eclipsed the narrative value of the
case itself, which – to be honest – Morris all but over-represented
and over-reenacted here in The Thin Blue Line. The picture won a
host of awards, but was disqualified from consideration for the
Academy Award because it was marketed as "nonfiction" rather than a
documentary.
