Review

A Danish family meets a Dutch family while holidaying in Tuscany and afterwards are invited to visit their new friends in the rural Netherlands, where things slowly start seeming not quite right. For as long as this Danish thriller directed by Christian Tafdrup retains an air of ambiguity, balancing between portraying various shades of transgression and hesitancy, it has a rather compelling nerve. During this first half, Tafdrup proves to be a brilliant observer of modern European etiquette and modesty, which, when transferred to extreme situations, may become an impediment. Unfortunately, the film loses much of its initial effectiveness – both explicitly and implicitly – when it ultimately turns into an absurdist parable of evil and passivity, drenched in Tafdrup’s special sauce of misanthropy.
