Review

Anthony Hopkins' bravura physical performance as a semi-burnt-out exorcist keeps this thematically rehashed film, about possessing demons and various members of the clergy trying to fight them off, half afloat. Unfortunately, there is not much else inspiring here, neither in the weary, long-winded script, nor in Swede Mikael Håfström's sleepy direction. The film lacks edge in almost every respect, and tries half-heartedly to compensate with stylish sets, Freudian explanations and forceful acting. The latter is the most effective of the three, with young Italian actress Marta Gastini putting in a sparkling performance alongside Hopkins.
