Review

Reisen til julestjernen has become a Norwegian Christmas classic, thanks mainly to its (over)exposure on NRK. It's a classically structured, at times delicately alluring children's fairytale imbued with an eerie stylistic palette. The acting is solid enough, and the writing is of fine technical, if not the most creative quality. Of course, the film suffers from backward special effects in a few crucial scenes, but it makes up for it with fine set design and costumes. On its naïve, archaic level, the film does touch upon the occasional truth. Comedian Harald Heide Steen Jr. livens it all up with his energetic, amusing supporting performance as the court jester.
