Review
A typically industrious, unostentatious
lead performance from Gene Hackman is the focal point of this
mid-1970s mystery-thriller directed by Arthur Penn (The
Chase,
Bonnie and Clyde). Though Alan
Sharp's story is a fairly run-of-the-mill detective yarn, the film
looks so good and plays so well that it retains both interest and a
certain nerve throughout, despite lacking genuine suspense. Penn's
greatest achievement here is mood: the film oozes 1970s fads,
fashion and sexual ethics, and you can't help getting caught up in
it all – to the point where ogling a 16-year-old seductress becomes
not only acceptable, but completely commonplace. Penn's work is less
smooth narratively than when he's examining his lead character's
psychology with Hackman. One notable exception is the neat set-piece
that rounds everything off. There are several middle-of-the-road
supporting performances among the large ensemble cast. Melanie
Griffith as the young girl, James Woods as a wheeler-dealer
mechanic, and Jennifer Warren as Hackman's mysterious love interest
are a cut above the rest.
