Review
This clever, playful, and rather inventive genre excursion became a
successful Danish export in 1994, kick-starting the careers of both its stars as well as filmmaker Ole Bornedal. Dabbling comfortably
at the intersection between investigative crime and visceral horror,
Nattevagten
creates a distinctly 1990s cinematic universe that you would
both
want to inhabit and avoid at all costs. It's arch-Danish in essence, with its free-spirited
drinking and thinking, but also knows its place in the film pantheon.
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Sofie Gråbøl, and Kim Bodnia are all delightful, but
Bodnia's performance is a stand-out. He would go on to become Scandinavia's
number-one film gangster, starring in Nicolas Winding Refn's
Pusher (1996).
