Review

American corporate profitability is up against old-fashioned Scottish country idleness in this charming and aptly unremarkable movie. Not only are both the comedy and the drama in Local Hero downplayed and often understated, but the film itself seems to have that same sedate level of ambition for itself. The director, Bill Forsyth, truly cares for his characters and their world, but apart from that, he cannot really be bothered. Peter Riegert’s lead performance is so unfashionable it almost became fashionable. And his main sparring partners – Burt Lancaster as his eccentric American boss, Peter Capaldi as his hapless colleague, and Denis Lawson as the offbeat local hotel owner slash accountant – provide the leisurely atmosphere that makes this a truly pleasant and rather original viewing experience.
