Jackass: The Movie (2002) Succeeded by: Jackass Number Two (2006)
When the Jackass team took their groundbreaking MTV concept to the big screen, they did it without much fuss with a film that was very much a continuation of the series, both in format and content. This meant a relatively limited budget and mostly simple, street-level stunts – with the exception of the one true set-piece that kicks it all off. The good thing about this was that they kept their existing fans happy; the perhaps not so good thing was that film critics were less impressed. They failed to recognise the driving force behind the success of the series and The Movie, namely its rebellious, aimless brand of hedonism – a fanfare for Gen X way of life, taken to the extreme by the Jackass crew. With their predilection for pain, nudity and scatology, they created their own cult aesthetic that translated surprisingly well to the big screen.
