Review

The first big screen adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's famous novel since Lewis Milestone's 1930 classic, and the first ever German adaptation, which in retrospect seems overdue. You might think this could bring a new level of authenticity to the story of Paul Bäumer, and you would be right. Because Im Westen nichts Neues is a feverishly realistic account of trench warfare anno 1914 to 1918; a harrowing tale of youthful patriotism and fighting spirit being turned into emptiness and apathy. The film is expertly staged and shot, with obvious nods to Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece Paths of Glory. And the filmmakers' device of contrasting the young soldiers' meaningless struggles with the snotty deliberations between the clean and posh German and French military leaders is an effective addendum. An ominous musical score by Volker Bertelmann and strong performances by everyone in front of the camera intensify this powerful experience.
