Review

Mel Gibson still has the star power and presence to carry a film, which makes him more or less ideal for the archetypal lead character of Hunting Season: a reclusive loner and devoted father who will protect his home, his family, and the weaker sex with good ol' all-American patriotism. The story, written by Adam Hampton, may seem cliched on a structural level, but it has some discerning touches and an unpretentious disposition that makes this a highly watchable picture, especially the segments involving the triangle of Bowdrie, January, and Tag. Unfortunately, the mob subplot is much less convincing, mostly due to the character of Alejandro, who is cartoonishly portrayed by Jordi Mollà.
