Review

Here's a politically charged entry in the fairly recent battle-royale sub-genre with a rather refreshing edge: So-called liberals use their powers to suppress so-called right-wingers in the ultimate manner – a staged and highly rigged manhunt – only to find that they may not be as intellectually (or morally) superior as they had thought. Director Craig Zobel has challenged the established notion of American ethicality before, notably with the intense 2012 thriller Compliance. And he is out to evoke some new thought-processes this time. It's not the violence and gore that's shocking with The Hunt – which on the contrary is playful – it's the nerve with which Zobel takes on PC culture and liberal elitism. And perhaps more importantly, that he does it without an agenda of his own, except of course to ruffle some feathers. The picture offers layers to sink your teeth into after watching, or perhaps during the somewhat uninspired end battle.
