Connoisseurs may recognise some of Luc Besson’s recurring motifs in Dogman, and yet this may be among the most original and spirited films of his later career. The enigmatic Caleb Landry Jones is perfectly cast and gives a virtuoso performance as the title character, a young man with an abusive childhood who finds compassion, companionship – and ultimately accomplices – in his large pack of dogs. The clever narrative build-up has you doubting his reliability as a narrator, and whenever the story may feel too scheming or audacious for its own good, Landry Jones’ portrayal and Besson’s scintillating character study elevate Dogman to a borderline unique cinematic experience. This is a film that mixes elements and has the boldness to graze controversial aspects without adhering to any one accepted morality – just like any true work of art should.
