Review

Strong, sympathetic performances by the two lead actors headline this remarkable based-on-a-true-story account of a 1977 hostage standoff involving the disgruntled investor Tony Kiritsis (Bill Skarsgård) and Richard Hall (Dacre Montgomery), one of his mortgage brokers, who Kiritsis blames for having purposefully derailed his latest land-development project. Director Gus Van Sant structures his film as a standard hostage story, but tonally he is much more adventurous, with plenty of media satire, tragicomedy, and a rather delicate combined yearning for and lampooning of the pre-connected era, with its gossipy news coverage and standoffish mass hysteria.
