Review
An elderly Abkhazian man and his
pubescent granddaughter settle for the summer on a small, fertile
island in the middle of the Enguri River, where they build a simple
hut and begin cultivating corn, while Abkhazian and Georgian forces
patrol the river looking for an escaped Georgian soldier. Georgian
filmmaker Giorgi Ovashvili aims for timeless cinema, heavy on
allegory and sparse on dialogue. He lets the story unfold slowly,
exploring nature’s cyclicity and humanity’s transience to at times
poetic effect, although his imagery and conclusions may be somewhat
too unremarkable to warrant this level of dawdling.
