Review
Despite dabbling in some American
clichés and laying out a familiar narrative structure at the outset,
CODA slowly but surely turns predictability into idiosyncrasy
and takes you on a heartrending yet uplifting journey in the lives of
the deaf – and
their children. Based on the award-winning French film La Famille
Bélier (2014) and adapted to an American setting by Sian Heder,
the film wraps itself in sentimentality, but makes sure it's a
warranted sentimentality by delving deep into the psyche of its lead character Ruby, exploring her predicament and budding individuation
with insight and subtlety. British actor Emilia Jones gives a
wonderful performance in the lead.
