Review

Granted, it’s a right-wing propaganda movie, set in Europe, addressing the issue of immigrants’ disproportionate crime rate in recent years. And yet, despite its unsubtle messaging, the problem with Citizen Vigilante mainly lies elsewhere than in its themes, such as the subpar craftsmanship, underdeveloped characters and poor storytelling. Armie Hammer’s lead performance is an odd combination of hapless and cocksure, which makes the character of Michael Sanders neither fish nor fowl. Hammer remains a plot device, there to hammer home filmmaker Uwe Boll’s convictions. It’s a method that doesn’t really achieve anything – and certainly not with any hint of elegance or subtlety. Boll tries to stand on the shoulders of Michael Winner's Death Wish, but only reaches its knees at best.
