Breakdown (1997)
Kurt Russell and his wife Kathleen Quinlan break down with their car in the middle of nowhere, on their way across the American continent. Soon, a friendly trucker shows up offering to help. Despite a few banalities, this cross between Deliverance and Malone – for what that's worth – delivers long stretches of interesting material. An effective atmosphere, a designful premise, and a clever connecting of the dots make this enjoyably suspenseful. This is a film that doesn't get impressed with itself – something which fits well with Kurt Russell's acting. The casting is fine, with Kathleen Quinlan in a thankless part and the world's most regular "regular guy", J. T. Walsh, in one of his last pictures. Even the final scene, however dumb, manages to remain nail-biting until the very end.
