Review
A meaningless Mel Gibson role combined
with a contrived story about a potential bad seed in the Albuquerque
police force sets this foray into the serial killer genre off to a
shoddy start. Most of the film is second-rate, not least Brian Van
Holt's performance as the lead detective – whose clenched
frustrations seem desperately laboured. The film wants to be a
hardboiled police procedural and a poignant social commentary, but
manages neither in its meandering focus and below-par production
values. Weston Cage, son of Nicolas, plays a suspect in the serial
killer case, but his character is ultimately underdeveloped and
underutilised.
