Review

If you get a spine-tingling reflex from the 'Backrooms' creepypasta that started going viral a few years ago, then this new horror feature may give you some illusory jitters in its first part. Utilizing early 1990s interior designs, colour palettes, and camcorders, the film takes you on a partly found-footage-style safari of interiors, immersing inwards for an inside look at our innermost internals. The lead characters are a shrink with childhood trauma (Renate Reinsve) and an alcoholic failed architect whose wife has recently left him. When he one day finds a hidden pathway to an enormous area of liminal spaces in the basement of his furniture store, he ventures into a realm of warped dimensions and distorted representations of the world outside. Backrooms is like a mildly annoying dream that never truly becomes a nightmare because you’re always too aware that someone’s mind is trying to trick you. And like such dreams, it also never makes much sense. Made by first-time director Kane Parson, one of the early exponents of the aforementioned internet phenomenon, the film offers plenty of easter eggs and tries to engage you in solving its mystery, which, of course, is not there to be solved. Instead, you’ll have to make do with grainy, yellowish cinematography and old horror tropes camouflaged as psychological depth, which chances are you’ll tire of long before this all fizzles out.
