Review
Nora (Renate Reinsve), a renowned
theatre actress struggling with stage fright and a history of
depression, and her sister Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas), a
devoted mother and wife, reunite with their father, the ageing,
celebrated film director Gustav Borg (Stellan Skarsgård), following
the death of their mother. After a prolonged creative drought,
Gustav has written a highly personal script for what he envisions as
his final film, and he wants his daughter Nora to star in it. The
filmmaking duo of Joachim Trier and Eskil Vogt return with their
follow-up to the universally hailed
Verdens verste menneske (The Worst Person in the
World), delivering another interpersonal dissection of
remarkable depth and vitality. Trier and Vogt create probing human
drama through everyday expressions, understated reactions, and small
drops of revelation that propel the story forward. In
Affeksjonsverdi, the scenes are shot and edited with wonderful
fluidity. Even when the narrative grazes the sensationalistic, there
is a sobriety to the style and pacing that reins it all in and makes
it feel authentic – which has arguably always been director Trier's
overriding goal. The film is elevated by very strong performances by
the three leads, with Skarsgård delivering what may well be the best
role of his later career.
