Review

Even the meta becomes meta in this combined slasher masturbation pastiche, Hollywood guilt trip, and queer identity appreciation. The filmmaker, Jane Schoenbrun, appears to be working on a very personal palette, even if every narrative twist and turn is derivative, and every characterological chrysalis is overcommunicated. The horror elements are mostly gimmicky farce – existing mainly as a basis for Schoenbrun’s homage to the slasher genre, sprinkled with quite a bit of criticism of its perceived gender bias in the good old days. Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma isn’t particularly immersive, relevant, or well-timed, but at least it boasts something approximating an artistic voice.
