Review
If you think you've seen Laurence
Fishburne in this exact same role before, it's probably because you
have. His Captain Franks here is a reprise of his Gus in
Passengers
(2016), and that's not the only thing this new sci-fi film has
borrowed. Most elements in Slingshot can be traced back to
either Passengers or
Moon, which incidentally was
scripted by Nathan Parker, one of this film's co-writers. Still,
until you realise the lack of inspiration in the script,
Slingshot may keep you fascinated for quite a while – the credit
for which goes to Casey Affleck. He is perfectly cast as John, an
astronaut sent on a long-term, hibernation-based mission to Saturn's
largest moon, Titan. The film's basic concept revolves around the
psychological side effects of the stasis experienced by him and his
crewmates, and director Mikael Håfström (Ondskan,
Escape
Plan) is able to create some suspense around this,
before the film slowly degenerates into a mush of yearning for your
loved one and a clichéd denouement of the mystery.
