The Rite
(2011)
Anthony Hopkins' bravura physical performance as a semi-burnt-out exorcist keeps this thematically rehashed film, about possessing demons and various members of the clergy trying to fight them off, half afloat. There is little else inspiring though, neither in the weary, long-winded script, nor in Swedish Mikael Håfström's sleepy direction. The film lacks edge in most every way possible, and tries half-heartedly to compensate with stylish sets, Freudian explanations and forceful acting. The latter is the most effective of the three, with young Italian actress Marta Gastini putting in a sparkling perfomance next to Hopkins'.
