Review

Do you remember when Steven Spielberg conceived wonderfully fresh science fiction concepts? Well, he didn't this year with Disclosure Day, but luckily, the filmmaking duo of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) picked up the mantle with the effervescent Project Hail Mary. When biologist Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up from an induced coma on the interstellar spacecraft Hail Mary, where things obviously have not gone exactly according to plan, you may recognise his mission and plight from countless other stories in this genre, but you also quickly get the sense of the stakes and specificities at play – which is exactly what a clever space mission story needs. The directors cook up an engaging, swift, modern narrative rhythm that drives the film forward with sprightly dedication. And although they may not find exactly the right balance between the cerebral and the giddy throughout the entirety of Ryland and Rocky's joint venture, the grandeur and audaciousness of their endeavours by far eclipse such minuscule reservations. Gosling is delightfully zesty in what is one of his best ever performances. Great fun!
