This infamous Italian sexploitation embarrassment was made to capitalise on the outrage and success of Ruggero Deodato’s Cannibal Holocaust a year earlier. The director, Joe D’Amato, had already made something of a name for himself in adult films, and Porno Holocaust remains one of very few examples of hardcore pornography crossing over into mainstream cinema. The ploy that made it possible, in addition to being made in an era of enormous artistic freedom, was the mixing of porn and horror. And so, this curious bird fluttered its way into various European cinemas during the early 1980s. Unfortunately, little is curious about either the sex or the horror on display in the film. It’s a narrative and technical disaster, written and made with so little skill and drive that you’d easily fall asleep, if not for the fact that you are constantly being slapped back to consciousness by the incessant bouts of fairly standard 1970s European pornography. Alas, they are almost as unerotic as the murderous “monster” on the island is unscary – when we finally get there. Granted, Porno Holocaust is a curio, but of the lowest possible quality.
