With Naked Gun 33 1/3, David Zucker effectively and ultimately ensures the death of the crazy comedy sub-genre that he himself initiated with Jim Abrahams and brother Jerry Zucker through the creative, hilarious and highly inspired Airplane! in 1980. By the delivery of Naked Gun 33 1/3, all those things had disappeared. There's nothing spontaneous or playful about this film, as Leslie Nielsen goes through another idiotic crime plot in order to catch the bad guys. Based mainly around recycling old ideas, the film doesn't even come up with the laughs in dialogue, let alone plotting.
