Review

This feelgood nostalgia trip back to 1980 is designed to tell us something about life as a college freshman on a baseball scholarship, but really tells us more about Richard Linklater's romanticized view of his own youth. The story is too slight and generic to give the film any real identity, and Linklater also fails to give it any sort of narrative drive. Instead he must cling to his "Greatest Hits of 1980" soundtrack and an over-talkative, quasi-philosophical dialogue for effect. With characters who feel more like modern young adults dressed up for a 1980s theme party than actual people from 1980, Everybody Wants Some!! never is able to transcend your run-of-the-mill college flick.
