Review

Shallow modern Americans are swayed by privilege, wealth and luxury into treating each other and themselves in shallow ways. This obvious comment on Epstein Island aims to portray the contemporary sicknesses of those not-so-United States, but unwittingly implicates much of the film business in the same indictment. Blink Twice is star-studded and bouncy, but also terribly affected and self-indulgent. First-time director Zoë Kravitz seems to think she's delivering sharp, double-edged social criticism, but it's a lazy and detached attempt, buried in trite storytelling. Ultimately, it's all reduced to a simple and underwhelming slasher movie with a far too long and self-important build up. Not even the vigilante justice and girl-power elements are made with any sort of inspiration. This is an almost unbearable film which plays into its own hyperbole; it's as empty as the milieu it claims to satirise. And is it really satire when there's no wit involved? Highlight: Candy Staton's "Young Hearts Run Free" on the soundtrack.
